I just received in the mail a copy of Matt Ridley's forthcoming book, The Rational Optimist. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a seminar last year at which Ridley discussed the book and solicited input and ideas.
Based on that discussion and Ridley's extraordinary intelligence and writing ability, this book will be stupendous, no doubt about it. Check out his blog here; good stuff.
